Ortho Rehab Alternative

The Orthopedic Day Program at Dayton Rehabilitation Institute is an alternative to post-operative care at nursing homes or with traditional home health care. Designed to care for individuals immediately after their surgery, the program provides the intensity of inpatient rehabilitation, without the need for hospitalization.

Treatment Program

Daily visits of approximately five to six hours in length are scheduled Monday through Friday, with each person receiving a minimum of three hours of therapy on every visit.

Exercise Machine

Treatment modalities include, but are not limited to, training in the following areas:

  • Mobility and gait training
  • Strengthening and range of motion exercises
  • Activities of daily living
  • Adaptive Equipment
  • Home management skills
  • Medication and pain management education
  • Incision assessment and care
  • Vital signs
  • Staple removal
  • Outpatient lab tests

Admission Criteria and Referral Process

The Orthopedic Day Program is intended for those who have undergone Orthopedic surgery, such as, Total Knee or Hip Replacement.

Upon referral from the orthopedic surgeon, a 6-day protocol will begin, adjusted as needed to each individual.

Program Guidelines

  • Program Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Patients may arrange their own transportation, or may ask the facility to arrange transportation to and from home at a cost of $20 per day, $10 per day one-way.
  • Patients are asked to bring their own medications in the correct prescription bottles.
  • A noon meal will be provided for patients at no additional charge. Patients may elect to bring their own lunch.
  • Patients should bring their own assistive devices, such as walkers, canes, etc.
  • Patients are asked not to attend the program on days they are feeling ill.

Program Goals

  • Gain sufficient strength and range of motion to carry out safe and functional activities.
  • Safely perform activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, and transfers to and from the tub/shower and toilet.
  • Demonstrate safe and functional mobility, including walking, stair climbing, and transfers into and out of bed.
  • Ability to perform basic home management skills.
  • Understand safety precautions for activities as ordered by the physician.
  • Demonstrate incision care and precautions.
  • Referrals to other agencies and programs for care after discharge from the Dayton Rehabilitation Institute.
